The game is set in Aarklash, a world of medieval fantasy where Knights, Wizards, Priests and Barbarians fight each other as well as fantastic creatures such as Wolfen, Elves, Orcs, Goblins and the Undead. The entire world is at war and all are fighting for the supremacy of the continent.
The game itself works on a simple principle: the excitement and absorbing competition of one on one play. The rules are intended to be versatile, and are able to represent a small fight between a handful of desperate warriors just as well as a large skirmish between several dozen soldiers and their leaders.
Getting Started
To begin playing Confrontation, each player needs to acquire between five and ten figures from one of the factions in the setting. The sculptors at publisher Rackham make game figures with dynamic poses, beautiful subjects, and a consistent artistic vision across the entire range. Each faction includes numerous characters and troop types, for a wide variety of choice.
Each blister contains one or more metal figures, a booklet of basic game rules, and a special reference card that describes the characteristics and special abilities of the game pieces. A photo or artist's drawing of the figures is on the reverse of the reference card, as a painting guide for the hobbyist.
Players also need several 6-sided dice and a table with scale scenery to play on.
Basic Rules
The Basic Rules Booklet packed with each blister describes the core rules of the game: movement, initiative, shooting and hand to hand combat.
In the recently released Confrontation 3 edition, the rules have been changed and combined into a single hardback edition. The changes in the third edition have changed how the game plays out per turn (a stacked deck of miniature cards vs. random draw) as well as tweaking the majority of the spells and abilities of each race.
Various Editions
"Confrontation" has had two prior editions - the first was only available in French and German, while the second was available in French, German, Italian, and English.
The first and second editions consisted of small-form rule books that were included in the various blisters. First edition had "Confrontation", "Incantation", and "Incarnation". The second edition updated these rules and added "Divination" and "Fortification".
First Edition Rules
Confrontation can be played with the basic rules alone, but the are several supplements available. These describe optional rules and multiply the tactical options allowed. All are packed free in the appropriate blisters, just like the basic rules.
